Every one of those foods could be contributing to reduced fertility, according to a new study by Harvard researchers.
It turns out that healthy young men who eat a lot of junk food aren't just wrecking their hearts and waistlines with all that trans fat--they could also be wrecking their chances of becoming dads.
The researchers analyzed sperm from men between the ages of 18 and 22. These men were determined to be in very good health without any other problems that might affect their fertility. Over the course of a few months, the men tracked their diets using food journals.
It was found that men whose diets were heavy in junk food produced sperm that weren't as likely to survive the trip to the egg as those produced by men who ate healthy diets. And this was regardless of whether the men were healthy and exercised.
The men who ate the highest levels of trans fat had the worst quality sperm. In contrast, the men that ate healthy diets centered on whole grains, vegetables, and fish had the best quality sperm.
This study goes hand-in-hand with another recent one out of Japan. That one showed that men who exercise moderately on a regular basis have more viable sperm than men who only exercise lightly.
If you know someone who is getting ready to start a family, here's the message for him: get off the couch and ditch the Taco Bell!
